Don't lose your mittens... or your gloves

Former Fifa vice-president has proudly presented us with the expression "the gloves are off" in his message/threat to other FIFA executives involved in the biggest corruption and racketeering scandal in its history.

If somebody says to you the gloves are off, they mean (choose one):

  • They are not going to cause you harm
  • They are got going to be aggressive to you

So what does comedian John Oliver mean when he says the mittens are on?

Worth a sonnet

How do we measure a person’s value?
Is it with abstract or concrete tools?
What speaks of our grandeur and unique qualities
Are the rules established by our community
What makes us want to spend time with persons
As relative, friend, colleague, or acquaintance
Is based on how we can be of assistance
How we can benefit them as a consequence
In other words, we have to prove our WORTH
From the very first moments of our birth
If we are good enough, then we are worth the while
If we’re not, we’re just a worthless ride
Let’s face it: we receive the time and attention
Of those who have their own intentions
