New Year stories from Chile

On December 29th, I talked about the best New Year ever.

Here I am now to share an account of a student who was on a visit to Chile:

Vina del Mar.

On the 31st, for supper we had a completely different main dish, unusual on the traditional Brazilian table: ostrich strudel.

For dessert, or "postre" in Spanish, there were a lot of fruit, pies, puddings, and ice cream.

No French toast, walnuts, chesnuts, hazelnuts, figs, raisins and plums as we have at our New Year's supper in Brazil.

I tried the cherry pie with cherry ice cream.

Superb! Cherries were in season in Chile. Very sweet and soft!

The place was nicely decorated and a young singer performed international songs.

I shouldn't have eaten and drunk so much!

Well, diets always start on January 1st.

This student had a completely different New Year. It must have been an interesting experience.
I`ve never tried ostrich but people say it`s good.
But my New Year supper was very good as well.
I stayed in Rio and tasted the delicious food mentioned: French toasts with a lot of sugar and cinnamon( I prefer them hot),chester decorated with peaches and plum served with manioc meal. I also had "salpicão", a typical Brazilian tropical salad.

Homemade food !
Instead of dried fruits as raisins, dates, walnuts , hazelnuts and chestnuts, I prefer the fresh ones: pineapple, melon and watermelon.
Pineapples are in season in Brazil. They`re unique!
I believe we Brazilians must adapt some European eating habits because while they are freezing there in Europe, we`re melting here in Brazil.

Back to French toasts and homemade food, here is my grandmother`s recipe :

French toasts:


• 4 eggs
• 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup milk
• 12 to 14 slices white bread
• butter
• i cup of coconut milk
• 1/2 cup of condensed milk
* 2 tea spoons of cinnamon


Break eggs into a wide, shallow bowl or pie plate; beat lightly with a fork. Stir in sugar, salt, milk, coconut milk and condensed milk.

Over medium-low heat, heat griddle or skillet coated with a thin layer of butter or margarine.

Place the bread slices, one at a time, into the bowl or plate, letting slices soak up egg mixture for a few seconds, then carefully turn to coat the other side.

Soak/coat only as many slices as you will be cooking at one time.

Transfer bread slices to griddle or skillet, heating slowly until bottom is golden brown. Turn and brown the other side.

Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on them.
Serve French toasts hot.
Recipe for French toast serves 6.

Yes we can speak English

Guess I'm a sucker for projects and project-based learning. Although this latest endeavor might not be considered a project in itself.
A simple Google search on the use of Whatsapp or other instant communication tools for English-speaking skills development came up with an extensive list of results.
The idea of creating a group to practice speaking had a specific target group - English teachers who are taking an online postgraduate course on language teaching. Many of them miss the chance to brush up on their oral skills, for the simple reason that the classes are online and interaction with the professor and colleagues comes only through text. 
The initiative rekindled a professional goal I had set for myself when I created the blog Help a teacher with their English (it has been discontinued - all related posts will show up here in the future). Nothing like being able to follow through on an idea and see it materialize into something you had not even fathomed in the first place.
