Why do we ask why?

The question above may appear ridiculous or philosophical. But it is actually very practical because it has to do with students' need to ask why they say this expression in English or why do we use the Present Perfect to talk about indefinite actions in the past.

Does it really help us learn better if we understand why something in a language is the way it is?

Do we stop to think about the way we say things in our native language?
